BEFORE THE STORM

The Ocean Between Us

Heroism Without The Uniform Watch two people fall back on hard won instincts to help strangers when the ship itself starts fighting back.

Two Lives Built On Crisis Meet a firefighter and an ER doctor who are both experts at staying calm while everything around them burns or breaks.

Relationships Cracking In Real Time Feel the slow, honest unraveling of two relationships that were already failing before the vacation even began.

A Connection Neither One Expected Experience the quiet pull between two strangers who meet at an empty bar with nothing left to prove to anyone.

A Storm That Turns Deadly Fast Brace for a calm sea that turns violent, tearing the ship open and throwing everyone into real danger.

A shipping container in the dark is only the start of the storm.

Ben runs into burning buildings for a living, pulling strangers out of smoke and flame with the calm of a man who has done it a hundred times before and will surely do it a hundred times again. Laura holds emergency rooms together with that same kind of focus, calling out orders while a heart stops and starts again under her steady hands. Both of them know exactly how to stay calm when everything around them is falling apart completely and fast. What neither of them knows yet is how much quieter, harder work waits back home: a girlfriend who wants Ben to want a safer life, and a boyfriend whose phone calls do not add up the way Laura needs them to.

A cruise meant to be a relaxing escape starts pulling at threads neither Ben nor Laura wanted touched in the first place. Nina keeps pushing Ben to explain why he still runs toward fires instead of climbing some safer, quieter ladder, and the argument that was never fully finished at home follows them right onto the ship. Laura overhears one half of a phone call from Michael that does not match anything he has ever told her, a single sentence through a cracked door that she cannot simply unhear. By the time the ship pulls away from port, both relationships are already cracking under weight that has been building for a long time before this trip ever began.

Alone and unsettled after their relationships quietly fall apart mid cruise, Ben and Laura both end up at the same nearly empty bar on a lower deck, each nursing a drink and watching black water slide past a small window in silence. Neither one is looking for company tonight, or thinks they are. A bartender who has clearly seen this exact kind of night more than once sends a drink from one of them to the other, and a single look across the room turns into a conversation neither of them expected to need this badly. What starts as two strangers sharing space slowly becomes something neither can easily walk away from once the ship keeps moving forward.

Everything about this trip was supposed to be simple. None of it turned out that way.
